St. Louis homeowners know their fences take a beating. The narrow alley-served lots behind brick two-family flats and 1920s bungalows mean short cedar runs between garages do the real work, and the freeze-thaw cycle that comes with Missouri winters heaves posts every season. St. Louis Fencing has been the call since 2011 when a fence needs to go up, come back, or stay put.

Whether your privacy fence is leaning, your gate is dragging off its hinges, or a storm brought down a whole section, we show up with crews who know the neighborhood, the code, and the craft. We work in St. Louis and the surrounding areas, and we've learned what holds and what doesn't on these tight lots and shifting ground.

Fencing for St. Louis (63101) and the Greater Area

St. Louis fencing is its own discipline. The housing stock, the lot geometry, and the soil conditions mean that a fence installed wrong won't last, and a fence repaired halfway won't hold. We install wood and vinyl privacy fences, chain link, ornamental metal, and gates on properties where access is tight, where setback rules are strict, and where the ground moves with the seasons. Our crews understand post spacing, concrete set versus tamped installation, board-on-board and side-by-side construction, racking and stepping for uneven terrain, and the hardware that keeps a gate square and self-closing.

We are AFA Member Installers (American Fence Association), fully insured, and we've been serving St. Louis and the St. Louis area since 2011. The same crews who estimate your job do the work.

Our services in St. Louis

How a Fence Job Works

We start with a free on-site assessment. You tell us what you need, we walk the fence line, check the existing posts and gates, and look at the site. We talk through material, height, setback, and local code. If you have a survey or deed restriction, bring it. We work from what you identify as your property line and will confirm that a Missouri 811 utility locate is done before we dig any post holes. That's the law, and it keeps everyone safe.

The work itself depends on what you're building. A new privacy fence means setting posts in concrete at proper spacing, hanging stringers and rails, and installing pickets or panels. Gate installation means bracing, hardware, and testing the swing. A repair might mean replacing a rotted post at the ground line, re-stretching chain link, resetting a gate on its hinges, or adding anti-sag bracing. We propose repair before replacement whenever the fence justifies it. On a narrow lot with garage access, we plan the work sequence so we don't block your driveway or your neighbor's.

We haul away old material and leave your property clean. You get a final walkthrough so you know what's been done and what the warranty covers.

Fence pricing in St. Louis depends on material, length, and site conditions. Wood and privacy fence runs from $27 per linear foot. Vinyl and PVC start at $38 per foot. Chain link is $16 per foot. Ornamental and aluminum metal fencing runs $42 per foot and up. A new gate installation starts at $495. Automatic and driveway gates begin at $2,900 and scale with the operator and controls you choose. Repair work, from a single post replacement to storm damage, starts at $475 for basic repairs and includes a free damage assessment. Fence removal and replacement is a separate bid based on length and material. Call us at (314) 668-1539 for a free estimate. We'll walk the fence line, talk through your options, and give you honest numbers.

My cedar fence is leaning after a couple of winters. Is it the freeze-thaw cycle, or do I need to replace the whole thing?
Cedar posts can heave and lean if they're set in tamped soil instead of concrete, or if the concrete has cracked and let water in at the ground line. We assess whether the posts are actually failing or just shifted. If the fence is structurally sound, we can often reset and brace it. If posts are rotted at the base, we replace them one by one without touching the rest of the fence. Replacement is not always the answer.
A storm knocked down a section of my fence. How do I document it for insurance, and what's the next step?
Take photos of the damage and the fence before the storm if you can. When you call your insurance company, describe what came down and when. We can help you document the damage for your claim, and we'll give you an honest assessment of whether the section can be repaired or needs to be replaced. We do not promise that any claim will be approved or that your work will be covered. That's between you and your insurer. Call us at (314) 668-1539 and we'll come out and look at it.
What does a new wood privacy fence actually cost in St. Louis, and what affects the price?
Wood privacy fence starts at $27 per linear foot for material and labor. A 100-foot run is roughly $2,700 before any site prep. Cost factors include post spacing (standard is 6 feet on center), whether posts go in concrete or are tamped, whether the ground is level or needs racking or stepping, gate openings, and site access. A tight lot with narrow alley access or power lines overhead can add complexity. Call (314) 668-1539 for a free estimate and we'll break down the numbers for your property.
Do I need a permit to install a fence in St. Louis, and are there height or setback rules?
Permit requirements and fence height and setback rules vary across St. Louis and the surrounding jurisdictions. Some areas require a permit, others do not. Height limits and corner-visibility setbacks are set by your city or county code. If you live in a master-planned community or HOA, deed restrictions and architectural standards may govern height, material, and color. We recommend checking with your local building department before you start. We work from your survey and install on the line you identify. A land surveyor can confirm your property line if you need that.
My neighbor's tree is hanging over my fence and dropping branches on it. What are my options?
Branches that overhang your property are yours to trim back to the property line. You cannot cut branches that hang over the fence unless they are on your side of the line. If you live in an HOA or master-planned community, check your architectural guidelines before any work. If the overhang is significant or the tree is large, talk to a professional before you climb a ladder. We focus on fence work, not tree trimming, but we can help you understand what's on your side of the fence line and what may need attention.
Is your company fully insured and what does that cover?
Yes, we are fully insured with general liability and workers' compensation coverage. Our crews are protected and your property is protected during the work. Ask us about our coverage when you call for an estimate.
I have a pool and need to install a fence around it. What are the code requirements in St. Louis?
Pool barrier requirements are set by Missouri state law and local code. A fence around a pool must meet specific height, gate hardware, and self-closing self-latching requirements. We install pool fencing to meet local pool barrier codes. Final determination of compliance rests with your local authority having jurisdiction, which is usually your city or county building department. A fence is a barrier, not a substitute for supervision. Call us at (314) 668-1539 and we'll discuss the code requirements for your property and install the fence to meet them.
